I’ll randomly draw and color images from volumes 1-7 of the manga Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
The colors are based on my own interpretation.
漫画版のナウシカは宮崎駿先生の才能がいかんなく発揮された最高傑作です。
映画のナウシカしか見ていないのであれば、ぜひ読んでみることをお勧めしたい。
The manga version of Nausicaä is a masterpiece that fully showcases Hayao Miyazaki’s talent.
If you’ve only seen the movie Nausicaä, I highly recommend reading the manga.
3巻 Volume 3
生き残った子供を見つけたナウシカ
Nausicaä finds the surviving child.
ナウシカに子供を預けられたクシャナ。最後はナウシカに対して
友や愛という感情のようなものを抱いていたようだ。
クロトワもそうだ。すべての人物、生き物がナウシカに惹かれていたようだ。それはナウシカの母性や献身さ、誰にも注がれる愛情によるものだろうか
Kushana, who was entrusted with Nausicaä’s child, seems to have harbored feelings of friendship and love towards Nausicaä in the end.
The same goes for Kurotowa. It seems that every person and every living creature was drawn to Nausicaä. Perhaps this was due to Nausicaä’s maternal instincts, devotion, and the love she showered on everyone.
瘴気を吸い瀕死のトルメキア兵 A Tolmekian soldier dying after inhaling miasma.
かあさん、苦しいとつぶやく兵士に ”Mother, I’m in pain,” the soldier muttered.
トルメキア兵たちでも毒の血を避けようとするのに、毒の血を吸い出すナウシカ
Even the Tolmekian soldiers try to avoid her when she spits out poisonous blood, but Nausicaä sucks it out.
かあさん・・・Mother・・・・
マリアか菩薩のよう Like the Virgin Mary or a Bodhisattva
この時までナウシカを貴様と呼んでいた兵士たちだが、この先ナウシカを命を捨てて守ろうとするようになる。クロトワはこの後も命令をきかないナウシカにいらだち”バカ娘”などと呼ぶが、いつもナウシカを気に掛けていたのがこの男である。
Up until this point, the soldiers had treated Nausicaä like a slave, but from this point on, they would be willing to risk their lives to protect her. Kurotowa continued to get irritated with Nausicaä for not obeying orders and called her a “stupid girl,” but it was this man who always cared about Nausicaä.

釈放しろだと？ You want us to release them?
とめてくれ fasten the hook.
私が拒否したらどうする 「ここを去って、土鬼軍に加わりあなたと戦う」
What if I refuse? ”I will leave this place, join the Dorok army, and fight against you.”
ナウシカいっしょに来い！手を汚すまいとするおまえのいいなりになるのは不愉快だ。
戦友としての忠告なら聞かぬでもない。
Nausicaä, come with me! It’s unpleasant to have to do what you want to do, since you don’t want to get your hands dirty.
I might listen if it’s advice from a fellow soldier.
捕虜釈放の命令書だ。受け取れ This is an order to release the prisoners of war. Take it.
さがれ！私は忙しい Get back! I’m busy.
クシャナはナウシカとしゃべる時、いつも笑顔です Kushana is always smiling when she talks to Nausicaä.
4巻 Volume ４
クシャナ軍の壊滅 Destruction of Kushana’s army
飛行船の沈没により、クシャナの率いる軍隊は壊滅。さらに蟲の襲撃を受ける
クロトワは重症で動けず、クシャナが背負って、叫ぶ ”立て！走るんだ！！”
The sinking of the airship annihilated Kushana’s army. They were then attacked by insects.
Kurotowa was severely injured and unable to move, so Kushana carried him on her back, shouting, “Get up! Run!”

Mother・・・
Who are you? Have you come to take my Kushana?
I will not let anyone have this child.
クシャナに飲ませるはずの毒を母が飲み、精神に異常をきたしています。いつかブ王（父）に復讐するチャンスを待っていますが、もうここまでか・・・・
Her mother drank the poison meant for Kushana, and is now mentally unstable. She’s waiting for a chance to take revenge on King Bu (her father), but it seems this is the end for her…
お前が私の死か・・・・So you’re going to kill me…
クシャナが歌ってやがる！？冗談じゃねえ。こんな時に
Kushana’s singing?! You’ve got to be kidding me. Not at a time like this.
なぜ歌っていたのかは５巻で語られています。
The reason why she was singing is explained in volume 5.
チチクと僧侶
翼のある女〈ひと）。天使？ A woman with wings. An angel?
チククはあなたが使徒に似ているといっています。
Chikuku says you resemble an apostle.
神は語っています。古き世界は滅び永い浄化の時が来ると・・・
God is speaking: The old world will perish, and a long period of purification is coming…
大海嘯はとめられないのですか？私たちが汚れそのものだとしても、なぜそのために木々や鳥や蟲たちまでが苦しまねばならないのでしょう。王蟲たちの苦しみや悲しみは誰がつぐなうというのです。
Can’t the great tsunami be stopped? Even if we are the very embodiment of filth, why should the trees, birds, and insects suffer because of us? Who will atone for the suffering and sorrow of the Ohmu?
（私はこの物語をファンタジーとは思っていません。今そのもののように思えます）
(I don’t consider this story to be fantasy. It seems to me to be a reflection of the present.)

Destruction is inevitable. Even the emperor’s folly is part of it. All suffering is a test for the world to be reborn.”No! Our wind god is telling us to live! I won’t give up!!”
ナウシカを描いていると宮崎監督の絵がとてつもなくうまいなと感じます。セリフも大好きです。すべてが完璧な作品です。映画は時間の制約や宗教的な要素からほとんど再現されていません。これがそのまま映画にできていれば、とてつもないものができたのにと感じます
When I draw Nausicaä, I’m struck by how incredibly skilled Director Miyazaki is at drawing. I also love the dialogue. It’s a perfect work in every way. The film couldn’t reproduce much of it due to time constraints and religious elements. I feel that if they had been able to make a film exactly as it was, it would have been something truly extraordinary.

The monks wanted Nausicaä, their apostle, to challenge their beliefs. Perhaps, if she was indeed an apostle, she could perform a miracle…
5巻 Volume ４
土鬼（ドルク）の皇帝ナムリス Emperor Namris of Doruk
ブ王率いるトルメキアと対するのが土鬼。
Doruk is the opponent of Tolmekia, led by King Bu.
使徒
あの導きがなければ私どもはみんな死んでおります。神が鳥をつかわして私たちを助けてくださったのです。「信じよう。だがそのことは口にしてはならん。いいか皆にもそう伝えよ」
Without that guidance, we would all be dead. God sent the bird to save us. “Let us believe, but we must not speak of it. Tell everyone that.”
古き神の名を軽々しく口にして僧会に異端とされたら、なんとする。村ごと査問されるぞ。
What will happen if you carelessly utter the name of an ancient god and are declared a heretic by the monastic order? Your entire village will be investigated.
ハ・・ハイ Y-Yes
あの二人だ。神の名を騙るとはあまりにも軽率な
Those two. It’s incredibly reckless of them to falsely claim the name of God.
そうだ。チククがやった。That’s right. Chikuku did it.
そうだですむと思うのか！ ｛チクク眠い・・】 コラッ！眠るな！！
Do you really think that’s going to cut it?! {I’m so sleepy…} Hey! Don’t fall asleep!!
お前は幼いから知らぬかもしれんが邪教の伝道者と疑われて火あぶりになった者が何人もいるのだ！
｛ナウシカは伝道者ではない。使徒だ｝
You may not know this because you’re so young, but there have been many who were burned at the stake after being suspected of being evangelists of a heretical cult!
{Nausicaä is not an evangelist. She is an apostle.}
使徒・・・・・・・！？ Apostle…! ?
バカな！あの少女はただの異教徒だ。あの翼もエフタルの民が使う凧だぞ！！
That’s ridiculous! That girl is just a heretic. Those wings are from a kite used by the Heftal people!
｛当たり前だ！使徒は人だ！翼が生えていたら化け物だ！｝
{Of course! Apostles are humans! If they had wings, they’d be monsters!}
チククはナウシカが好きだ Chikuku likes Nausicaä.

７巻（最終巻） Volume 7 (Final Volum
巨神兵のママ The mother of the giant robot
あなたはとても強い力を持っている優しい子（チククのように）。でも・・・・力の恐ろしさも学ばなければいけないの。
You are a kind child with great strength (like Chikuku). But… you must also learn about the dangers of that strength.
世界を敵と味方だけに分けたら、すべてを焼き尽くすことになっちゃうの。
If we divide the world into only enemies and allies, we’ll end up burning everything to the ground.
私のいいつけを守って、立派な人になりますか？（セルム・・・どうか私を導て）
Will you follow my instructions and become a fine person? (Selm… please guide me.)

Go forth, my beloved wind.
ユパさまが・・・・・いってしまわれる
Lord Yupa is leaving…
クシャナをかばいユパが亡くなる
Yupa dies protecting Kushana.
チククこの人知ってる。ナウシカがよく話してくれた先生だ。
Chikuku, I know this person. He’s the teacher Nausicaä often talked about.
クシャナのこともナウシカが教えてくれた。クシャナは深く傷ついた鳥だと言った。本当は心の広い
大きな翼をもつやさしい鳥だって。
Nausicaä also told me about Kushana. She said Kushana was a deeply wounded bird. In reality, she has a big heart.

Let’s become friends, Chikuku and Kushana.
命の価値 The value of life

人がばらまく毒に汚染された台地。そこに迫る人類の滅亡。滅亡の後に人類の復活の術が

A plateau contaminated by human-spread poison. The extinction of humanity looms. The secret to humanity’s resurrection after the destruction lies inscribed on a stone tablet in a tomb.
Nausicaä heads to the tomb to destroy it.
